Hang It!

Hang It!

There is something special and beautiful about hanging one’s clean laundry on the line. I love the fresh crispness of the clothes… knowing that they’ve been additionally whitened, brightened and deodorised by the shining sun. I still use the dryer for some things like socks and underwear and I might also throw the towels in the drier just to fluff them up a little. The added benefit of using the line to dry clothes is that they last longer! Have you ever noticed all the lint that collects in the lint filter of the drier? A lot of that is the clothes slowly wearing away… a good reason to line dry.

wringer

In fact I love my washing machine! I love the convenience…but I must tell you that the cleaning power doesn’t come close to that of twin tubs, let alone the old wringer washing machine my mum used to use. On more than one occasion dad offered to buy her an automatic washing machine but she wouldn’t take him up on the offer – she didn’t mind the hard work and she loved the results! I’ve often said to John that our next machine should be a twin tub machine…but we’ll wait and see. It would take a bit of a mind switch for me to develop a new weekly laundry routine, but I’m sure I would manage. What is your laundry routine?

  1. Hi Susan,
My husband changes the beds on Mondays, and washes at least three other days a week.

We only hang out the bedlinen, towels and teatowels, as we live very close to a dirt road, and we also have super friendly sparrows, so the rest of our washing is put onto clothes racks on coat hangers – makes for easier ironing, too, or onto clothes airers.

We only ever use the clothes drier during really wet winter months – cheaper and easier.

We have a Kleenmaid washing machine – similar to the large ones in the laundromats, and it gets everything super clean – better than the old twintub that I used to have, and so much easier. :-D

    Have a great week,
    Blessings,
    Jillian

  2. I hate washing with a passion.

My eldest is hanging in most days. We have about 3 loads a day. Two get hung in the morning and one at night.

Tomorrow he is going to Adelaide for a few days. I will have to rope someone else in to do it.

    • Susan :

So Therese, did you get someone else to hang the washing out? ;)

      • absolutely. Although it is only because I am so pregnant. Before pregnancy, I was hanging most of the washing while Tom and Amelia did their spelling and the another load after tea each night.

Daniel won’t be here during the week starting February so I will probably take over hanging out our washing again then unless I can rope someone else into it. :-D

Ohhhh I love washing and ironing, I just love the smell and the freshness…….it is my job in my house, I like it!!!

I am rearranging by routine this year, I am trying to do 2 loads every 2 days I used to do washing in one day a week but have found that as the kids get older and their clothes get bigger we do not FIT on the line anymore. So after the twin tub in Manila (I was frustrated out of my head with balancing the spinner AAAHHHHHHHHH) I relish my huge Maytag front loader, my mum swears it does not wash as well as a toploader or a twintub, but it is economic for my tribe……….

But you gals gotta see my entry on Pring a mother of 5 in Baseco and how they wash there and thank God for electricity and our fresh clean environment!!! It is amazing that mothers all over the world from different socio economic levels can relate when it comes to washing and keeping clean……but we have the easier life by far, imagine washing like this pregnant or sick, in the sticky humidity of the Philippines……we just have it so so easy!!! Thank God

I love clean laundry on the line, but we have just moved into a unit with no personal outdoor space and no washing line. I’m currently hanging them on a fold out line in the laundry as we don’t have a dryer, but after my first load this way I’m not happy with the smell, they dried slower and you know how you get that smell when you forget to hang a load out and it’s been sitting wet overnight or something, they have that smell even when they’re dry, and they still smell soapy too.

    any ideas ladies?

    • Susan :

Yep, I hear you…we can’t always hang our washing out either as the line is not in the sun. How about putting a few drops of essential oils in the rinse water? I do that sometimes. 5. Amanda :

Wow! I am amazed that Cathy only washed clothes on one day a week!! Especially with 6 children and two adults :O I wash nearly every day and there is always more to go. Admittedly, I have only ever had a 5 kilo machine, so I can’t fit a lot in there.
